At certain times of the year, especially when the royals are away, parts of the palace are opened to the public, offering visitors a glimpse of the royal lifestyle.

Outside, you can marvel at the impressive building and watch the famous Changing of the Guard to witness quintessential English pageantry and tradition. Changing of the Guard happens almost every day at 11 am, but check the website before you visit to avoid surprises. Only open to the public a couple of months a year: between July and October.

The Elizabeth Tower, or the Great Bell of the striking clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster lovingly nicknamed Big Ben, is an icon of London. The 16-story clocktower is one of the most prominent symbols of the country and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

As the tower has been in renovation since 2017 and is estimated to be completed in 2021, there is little to see except its clock face as it is surrounded by scaffolding. However, it is a good spot to stop by and take in the surroundings before going on to the many other nearby historical places.
