24. Visit the Quirky Museum of the Weird
The Museum of the Weird is perhaps one of Austin’s oddest attractions. It continues the old-timey tradition of the dime museum with aplomb, offering intrigues to enthrall visitors of all ages. The museum, created by artist-entrepreneur Steve Busti, has the same sorts of curios you might have seen in the original dime museums.

See strange exhibits, such as a feejee mermaid, shrunken heads, a cyclops pig, a two-headed chicken, waxworks, and a special exhibit called “The Minnesota Iceman”. You will also be shown into a theatre where unusual performers work for tips. Though it no longer costs a dime, this museum is well worth the entrance fee for those looking to experience something utterly out of the ordinary.

25. Marvel at the Cathedral of Junk
Hidden away in an ordinary suburban backyard right here in Austin is the ultimate upcycling project. This unique structure is made entirely from objects other people have thrown away. Made from some 60 tons of old bicycles, furniture, and other junk, this unusual shelter was constructed by Vince Hannemann. It has been constantly evolving since he started the project in 1989.

There have been some complaints about this controversial structure over the years, but several city engineers found it to be structurally safe and sound. The cathedral can be rented out for parties or other special events, and people even get married here. It is also often open to the public, for a donation, though you must call ahead to make an appointment.

26. Arrange a Tour of Casa Neverlandia
This private residence is a beautifully quirky home that reveals how architecture and interior design do not have to be boring. It is definitely possible to think outside the box in this provocative setting. Email ahead to arrange for a tour of this private residence and you will be amazed by the wonderful features you’ll find here, which include an Indonesian style A-frame ping-pong room trimmed in bamboo, a vinyl record-clad music room, a tower with great city views accessed by means of a rope bridge, and a number of fire poles for easy descent from one floor to the one below.
There is also an ingenious no-tech intercom system made from PVC piping and a gallery showcasing Talbot’s bead and mixed-media art.

29. Live History at Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farms
Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farms is a fascinating living history museum. It’s located towards the north of the city’s outskirts, but well worth taking time out from the city center to go and visit.

31. Take a Trip to McKinney Falls State Park
Another popular excursion, and a must for nature lovers, is McKinney Falls State Park just to the south of the city. This park is located at the confluence of the Onion Creek and Williamson Creek.

The main attraction here is, of course, the falls themselves. Go swimming at the Upper Falls and you can admire up close the ancient volcanic rock formations. This is also another great place for hiking or biking. There are around nine miles of trails throughout the park visitors can enjoy. Note that there is an entrance fee for adults, though this is well worth paying for the privilege of enjoying the stunningly scenic surroundings.
